The ship unfortunately struck a reef, tearing open the frame and discharged 11 million gallons of oil into the ocean and surrounding environment. Initial reactions by Exxon and the pipeline company were poor to contain a significant part of the spill, and a storm came spreading the oil significantly. Inevitably, more than 1,000 miles of coastline were contaminated, and a huge number of creatures died.
